Witches of Essex - A Photo Project

For some time now I have been enamoured with the witch. What is a witch? Who is a witch? What do witches do? Are you born to it or can anyone be a witch? Tarot, crystal balls, skulls, plant lore are just some of the witchy things that draw my own attention but I know that the world of occult is vast and varied. Essex in particular has a long and bloody history with the witch, from the infamous county witch trials, to the stories surrounding Canewdon witch country, Essex is rife with old lore, myths and legends surrounding the witches, or those branded as witches, that lived here.

Today, witches seem to be popping up in various places. From little local shops to youtubers and podcasters, being a witch no longer carries the stigma it once did. Or does it? I am intrigued. I want to explore further, so I am planning a photo project called the Witches of Essex. I want to explore the lives of modern day Essex Witches. Are they now free from the stigmas of the past or is there still a battle to be had? How does being a witch enrich and empower their daily lives and why do they choose this path? What do the witches of Essex look like today and how does the past vilification of those labelled as witches, impact their experience in the present day?

If you are a witch in Essex and would be willing to be photographed and interviewed for this project then I would love to hear from you. You can get in touch by clicking the link here. I can’t wait to hear from you!
